Series 3

Episode 1 (JTR=2)

Dr Christine Fletcher returns from holidays to her new position as Consultant, or, as Judy refers to her, 'the iron lady of St Vic's'. The staff organise a welcome-back prank.

Sam Docherty, the new nurse-practitioner, arrives at St Vic's to the admiration of two members of staff, Terry Harkin and Stuart Phelan.

The first emergency of the episode is a young couple, Lisa and Bobby, who have been brought in as a result of a motorcycle accident. Lisa was driving and her passenger boyfriend, Bobby, was thrown from the bike, hitting a tree.

Robert demands to know where is 'the bloody surgeon'.

Jack makes his first appearance walking with Raz through the corridors, discussing horse racing and betting.

Robert accompanies Jack and the gurney carrying Bobby to theatre, commenting along the way on Jack's time-keeping. Jack says he wasn't in a hurry as he knew the patient was in Robert's safe hands.

Jack asks the theatre staff where the general surgeon is but decides to forgo him in favour of Robert, describing the general surgeon as a 'complete prat'.

Judy and Christine tend to Lisa (a medical student), removing her neck brace and announcing she has a broken ankle as well as a bang to the head.

Ingnoring Raz's suggestions that he get a move on - 'any time this week would be good, Jack' - Jack Turner coolly prepares to open up Bobby's abdomen to remove his spleen. Further on into the operation he offers Robert a turn. Robert raises the height of the operating table and Jack complains he can no longer see. Raz tells Jack to stand on a box to which Jack replies that he is standing on a box.

Cathy shows Sam around the department, introducing her to Kate Brady, an SHO (Senior House Officer) who promptly gives Sam fetch and carry jobs.

Judy lets Christine know that Lisa's GSC (Glasgow Coma Scale) has dropped. Christine finds Lisa disoriented and immediately orders a CT scan.

Christine asks Robert about the 'charming new surgeon'. Robert and Jack trained together and are friends, although not close enough to have Jack on speed-dial.

Christine and Robert rush to the scanner where Lisa has lost consciousness and her condition is deteriorating rapidly. Attempts are made to introduce an airway before she is rushed back to Resus.

Robert speaks to Stuart whose girlfriend Louise is pregant. Louise has a scan scheduled and Robert tells Stuart to go along too.

Christine and Judy watch over Lisa in Resus. Christine tells Judy that Lisa is irreparably brain damaged. While going through the girl's belongings to find contact details for her family, Christine finds an organ donor card. Christine dashes off to organise collection of Lisa's organs but is quickly reminded by Robert that Christine firstly needs parental consent.

In the operating theatre the radio blares out a horse race. When the race finishes Raz cheers and Jack swears. Christine, who is looking for clues to contact Lisa's parents, asks Jack how much he has lost. 'Enough', he says and Raz adds that's its enough to part own the horse. Once Jack has finished stitching up Bobby, Christine asks if Jack has any of the boy's property, hoping it will lead her to Lisa's family. After trying to cadge a cigarette from Christine, Jack directs her to the bundle containing Bobby's belongings.

Stuart and Louise are on their way for Louise's first ultrasound when a pregnant woman gets in the lift with them, and yep, you got it, immediately goes into labour and the lift jams. By the time the technicians arrive, the baby has been delivered.

Christine asks Robert if Jack is going to be 'a pain in the arse.' Robert says, "Yeah, probably, but at least he'll liven things up."

Lisa's parents, Mr and Mrs Rogers, arrive and although they initially agree to Lisa's organs being used for transplants, her father quickly changes his mind when he sees Lisa lying in Resus.

Sam's one night stand from the previous night is brought in for medical attention by two policemen. He has accused them of spraining his wrist when he was arrested. When he sees Sam he confronts her for an alibi but she pretends she doesn't know him. Later, in the privacy of a treatment cubicle, Sam agrees to help him if he keps quiet about their relationship.

Robert and Christine tussle over management of the donor case. Robert blames Christine for not getting the parents to see Lisa earlier and for rushing to call the transplant co-ordiantor.

Louise and Stuart have missed their scan appointment, but are finally fitted in. The scan shows the baby is a month older than Louise thought and Stuart realises the child can't be his.

Christine runs into Jack in the corridor. He commiserates with her on the transplant collection being cancelled and ends the conversation by hoping she doesn't screw up, 'because it's your first day and all.'

Sam speaks to the two policemen waiting for their detainee. Holding up an x-ray, Sam tells them they haven't sprained the man's wrist, but broken it in two places and he'll be filing for bodily harm. She suggests they come to some arrangement with him and, to emphasise the point, hands over a 'no violence' poster.

In an effort to convince Mr Rogers to go ahead with the organ donation, Christine takes the parents to meet Bobby. Both Raz and Jack allow the visit but insist that the patient not be told of Lisa's death. The plan backfires when Bobby realises from the Rogers' emotional state that Lisa is dead. Mr Rogers accuses Christine of interfering and an argument errupts.

Christine sits with Lisa but Terry comes to tell her that Jack is waiting to see her in her office.

Christine tells Jack that if he wants to complain, to do it officially. He says that she coerced a relative, 'always a bit risky', while Christine picks up the phone to speak to the transplant co-ordinator. Just as Christine is about to tell the co-ordinator that the donation is off, Jack says, "Congratulations, because it seems to have worked." Both Mr and Mrs Rogers spoke to Jack and Mr Rogers changed his mind. "Which is quite a coup for your first day."

After the transplant team has arrived, Jack takes over Christine and Robert's office for a smoke as 'it's freezing outside and there's a load of transplant surgeons' in his own office. When Robert asks Jack for a cigarette, Christine comments that she thought he had given up.
Christine: Was he always such a bad influence on you?
Robert: Absolutely. Can you still blow smoke rings?
Jack puts his feet up on the desk and leans back.
Jack: I doubt it. I'm not even going to try.
Christine leaves them to it.
