Episode 9 (JTR=2) (a brief summary - longer version to come)

Raz pulls up outside A&E in his four-wheel drive, mountain-bikes stacked on the roof. He is taking Cathy and Yvonne riding for their day off.

Christine is at Jack's place, hurriedly dressing and collecting her things before work. Jack offers her coffee but she declines as she has to pick up some clothes from her own home. Jack wants to know why she doesn't just move some of her belongings into his place but Christine thinks that is a 'slippery slope'.

In the pouring rain, ambulances bring two car crash victims, a mother and daughter, in to A&E. The young girl, Hayley, has a fractured leg and Andrew organises for Jack, who is playing tennis, to be called in as the trauma team is busy.

Stuart speaks to Christine about applying for the registrar's position that has become vacant. Stuart says he knows the job is Mike's but he wants to apply for the experience and to show that he is interested in moving up in the future.

Kate is attending to Hayley's father, Carl. He has air-bag burns on his face although he denies driving the vehicle. kate is suspicious of the circumstances of the crash.

A call comes in that two casualties are on their way to St Vic's. Christine, Robert, Mike and Stuart are there to meet the ambulances. They discover that the first casualty is Yvonne. Cathy is in the next ambulance. Raz reports that part of the track gave way in the rain and both Yvonne and Cathy fell thirty foot.

Hayley's father, Carl, wanders into resus where Yvonne and Cathy are being treated. He is upset that his daughter is still waiting for a surgeon. Terry loses his temper and pushes the man from the resus area, telling him to wait his turn. Cathy, from behind her oxygen mask, tells Terry not to shout at the patients.

Jack attempts to calm David for the forthcoming operations by discussing his interrupted tennis match.

The first theatre is ready and Yvonne, with internal bleeding, is rushed upstairs. By the time the team reaches the third floor, Yvonne has lost consciousness.

Still in resus, with a shattered pelvis, brokem femur and flail chest, Cathy begins to have breathing difficulties and Raz intubates her.

After so recently losing her father, Judy is finding it difficult to cope with the stress of seeing two friends critically injured.

Andrew attempts to get Hayley to talk about the car accident. Hayley tells Andrew about the fits her father has been experiencing for a year or more and that he had been driving the car when it crashed that morning. Andrew confronts Carl.

Hayley's mother's condition deteriorates and Mike needs to intubate her. Raz, however, is busy with Cathy so Mike decides to do it himself, against the guidelines of Jack's policy.

Robert and Raz struggle to get Cathy stabilised.

Jack and David are closing up Yvonne's operation when the alarms sound. Yvonne's blood pressure is dropping and Jack discovers an aortic bleed. The thoracic surgeon arrives but the team is unable to save Yvonne.

A&E staff are devastated at the news of Yvonne's death. Sam makes a comment to Judy and Terry about needing to get agency coverage for Cathy and Yvonne's positions. Terry snaps at Sam and Judy says she has no compassion for their loss. Sam runs off in tears.

Jack has to break the news to Yvonne's parents over the phone.

Jack discovers Sam weeping in the tea-room. "It was not a good day, was it," Jack commiserates. He asks Sam if she would like to go for a drink.

In the locker-room, Christine sits alone.

Jack sits in the corner of a bedroom. His mobile rings. It is Christine but he rejects the call. In the bed, Sam lies awake.
