Episode 1 (JTR=2)

Robert wakes to the sound of his alarm and stare's at Issy's photo by his bed until Harry calls. It's the second anniversary of his wife's death.

Terry shows the new medic, Danny Barton around the cafe but word that an emergency is coming in clears the cafe of A&E staff.

Jack's beeper goes off, waking him. Next to him in the bed, Fiona sleeps on.

A pile-up results in multiple casualties arriving at St Victor's.

Jack arrives to give an opinion on the patient Christine is attending to. Christine's comments to Jack are mildly sarcastic.

Jack decides that Christine's patient needs neuro-surgery, determining her situation to be critical. However, Mr Drummond isn't available so Jack decides he'll do the procedure himself. Ruth, the anaesthetist, supports the decision but Christine is opposed, demanding that he wait on Jeffrey Drummond. As the trolley is pushed onto the lift, Christine says, "Or have you completely forgotten everything that happened?" Jack replies, "How could I? There's always someone there to remind me."

In the operating theatre Ruth looks through a text book, saying "If in doubt, send for a text-book and a rather large drink." Christine again tries to dissuade Jack from attempting the operation. She says Mr Drummond will be available in half-an-hour but Jack doesn't think the patient will last that long. He picks up the surgical drill and begins work on the patient's skull.

Christine has applied for the Clinical Director's position (vacated by Jack) and corners Robert to seek his approval.

Danny treats a cocky patient named Frankie who has broken ribs.

Harry's babysitter turns up in A&E with the child. She says she can't cope with Harry's antics and resigns on the spot, leaving the toddler in Robert's arms. Robert hands Harry over to the orderly, Ajay.

Jack's operation seems to be successful but the patient suddenly arrests. Jack attempts resuscitation but eventually has to pronounce the woman dead. Drummond turns up in theatre, too late to help.

Sam Docherty sees her brother Michael in the waiting room, badly beaten. Sam berates him for turning up at her workplace, offering no sympathy for his obvious injuries. She insists he not let anyone know he is her brother.

Jack does his best to avoid speaking to anyone and heads outside to light up a cigar.

Robert sews up the head of a man named Gary who was injured in the pile-up. His young son, Ben, an asthmatic, sits with his dad in the cubicle until his mother, Marie, shows up.

Frankie attempts to discharge himself but collapses at the front-desk.

A man bursts into the back of one of the ambulances arriving at St Vincent's. He says he is looking for his brother-in-law, Peter Martin. After being kicked out of the ambulance, he heads into A&E asking staff for news of Peter.

Christine confronts Jack over the dead patient, blaming him for the woman's death.

Jeffrey Drummond has his turn at Jack. Jack says he did what needed to be done and Drummond can't object to that.
Drummond : You know me better than that.
Jack: Well I've had to revise my opinion about a lot of people around here, I couldn't resist including you.
Christine chimes in but when asked for his opinion, Robert refuses to support Drummond or Christine and tells Drummond to find somewhere else to conduct his witch-hunt.

Frankie has been deposited in a private room and Danny is about to give him the results of his blood test when the 'brother-in-law' walks in on them. Danny tries to call security but the man, who identifies himself as Eddie, pulls a pistol out of his pocket.

Christine wonders why Robert backed Jack Turner. Robert says that he doesn't think Jack did anything wrong. When Robert asks Christine if she would have had the same reaction when she and Jack were 'loves young dream', Christine is adamant that she would never let her personal feelings get in the way of a decision.

Young Ben is leaving the treatment area with his parents as they argue over the accident. Ben collapses as a brawl breaks out and Robert rushes him to Resus with an acute asthma attack. Gary and Marie continue to argue over the trolley as attempts are made to resuscitate the boy.

Sam cleans up her brother in a cubicle. Michael tells Sam that he is in debt and the beating is a warning. He tries to borrow money from Sam.

Danny tries to talk Eddie into putting the gun away. Robert, still searching for Danny, tries to open the door but it has been jammed shut with a chair. Robert kicks in the door and he too becomes a hostage.

Robert tries to get Eddie to talk. Eddie blames Frankie for the death of his son, Steven. Eddie refuses to be talked out of killing Frankie and eventually shoots him in the chest. Robert tries to save the man but Eddie aims the pistol at him, preventing him from assisting the dying man. Danny dives for the gun and it goes off, the bullet grazing Robert's arm.

Christine sews up Robert's arm. Jack offers his condolences and, with a glance at Christine, thanks Robert for seeing the earlier incident his way.

Danny and Robert head for the cafe for a drink where Sunita, Ajay's sister, has been looking after Harry.
