Lorna Doone

The Guardian; Manchester (UK); Dec 27, 2000; Nancy Banks-Smith;

Let me urge you with word and gesture to steer clear of swamps. Two fine actors vanished before my appalled eyes within a couple of hours on Boxing Day. In that rollicking Victorian twaddle Lorna Doone (BBC1), Carver Doone, as blackhearted a villain as ever shot a bride at the altar, sank slowly into the swamp until only his double-barrelled eyes were left blazing. This everyday story of West Country folk was enlivened by Michael Kitchen playing Hanging Judge Jeffreys in a Brando-esque whisper as quite a nice old thing really.

Many thanks to Deb for digging out this review.
